Our artist of the week this week isn't just an artist; he's a cultural icon, a champion of African creativity, an international pioneer of the continent's sounds since breaking into the mainstream with his 2015 hit "Skin Tight". @MrEazi – AKA Oluwatosin Ajibade – was born in Nigeria, but relocated to Kumasi, Ghana, for university and has made his name with a distinctive, infectious style he calls "Banku" – a mix of Nigerian and Ghanaian pop, highlife and dancehall. Six bodies of work and several smash Afrobeats singles over the past 10 years, Mr Eazi's reputation in the African pop culture space is second to none.
The 32-year-old, who got his first taste of the music industry as a promoter, has built an ardent worldwide following – his top three Spotify territories are Santiago, London and Paris respectively – as well as a reputation for nurturing and showcasing other African talent. It's something he takes very seriously.
Beyond the music, he's been able to successfully paint his image as a serial entrepreneur and an advocate of creative freedom for young, emerging artists in Africa. He's been able to achieve the latter through his Empawa African company. The singer is married to Actress Temi Otedola and they host a podcast together.
